The hardest part was admitting I had no control over my eating habits—I was often overwhelmed by emotional eating, secretly consuming massive quantities of food.

The First Steps: Finding My Stepping Stones

I had to start somewhere, even if that meant beginning with tiny, hesitant steps. Initially, I was consuming thousands of calories, often during hidden binge sessions that left me feeling isolated and helpless. The challenge was to find something, anything, that was a healthier choice than what I was doing before, without expecting perfection overnight. This marked the beginning of my stepping stone approach—a concept that helped me transition from indulgence to moderation, even while knowing I wasn’t ready to make drastic changes.

Small Changes, Big Impact

One of the first changes I made was to switch from pints of ice cream to kids’ low-calorie fudge bars. Though it felt trivial, this incremental adjustment was transformative. Individually wrapped and time-consuming to open, these bars provided built-in moments of pause—opportunities to reconsider my next action. Even when I faltered and polished off an entire box, it was still less than the two to three pints I used to consume in one sitting.

Similarly, I transitioned from devouring entire packs of chocolate bars to savoring individually wrapped Hershey’s kisses. Again, this was more than making a better nutritional choice; it was about redefining my relationship with food, allowing me a moment to reflect before diving in. These small, wrapped treats became my daily indulgence, a tactile reminder that I was worthy of enjoying food without the accompanying shame.

Reclaiming My Right to Enjoy Food

Cereal became another part of my evening ritual, replacing my secretive fast food runs. I turned to Honey Bunches of Oats, a choice that felt indulgent yet freeing, and permitted myself to snack openly at home, surrounded by friends and family. It was crucial for me to destigmatize eating in public, to break away from the secrecy that had come to define my meals.

Bread and croissants, items I once banned in futile weight-loss attempts, re-entered my diet. I allowed myself to indulge in their buttery goodness daily, transforming them from forbidden temptations into enjoyable, planned treats. There is a profound psychological relief in granting yourself permission to enjoy your favorite foods—it enables you to approach them with mindfulness rather than guilt.

Permission became a recurring theme as I reclaimed foods I had wrongfully vilified, pizza being one of them. Initially, I compromised by making mini pizzas with toppings I didn’t truly enjoy, a misguided attempt at health. However, this initial allowance paved the way for the more balanced meals I enjoy now, complete with my favorite toppings like pepperoni and cheese.

I also discovered the power of single-serving treats like Hostess cupcakes and mini Reese’s cups. By designating a daily treat, I dismantled the myth that sweets were an absolute no-go. Placing them visibly into my meal plan, I could savor them without jeopardizing my progress.

A New Way to Approach Fast Food

Eating out was another hurdle I tackled by choosing simpler, straightforward options from fast-food menus—like Wendy’s baked potatoes—rather than avoiding these places or using them to binge in secrecy. Socializing while eating also helped to normalize food and integrate these aspects into a healthier lifestyle.

Embracing Imperfection

What I learned through each misstep, each moment of overindulgence, was that perfection isn’t the goal. Progress is slow, nonlinear, and sometimes fraught with backslides. Weight loss, I realized, didn’t resolve all emotional struggles. It was a journey of healing both my heart and mind.

Now, looking back, it is the stepping stones that made all the difference. They were not just food choices; they were choices of self-respect and kindness. For anyone else on a similar journey, remember that each small step forward is significant. It’s about being a bit better than yesterday, finding your stepping stones, and slowly emerging from the shadows one deliberate choice at a time.
