Understanding metabolism: what speeds it up and what doesn’t
“Boost your metabolism” is one of the most overused phrases in wellness marketing. Metabolism is simply the sum of the energy your body uses — and while it varies between people, it is far less controllable by quick tricks than headlines suggest.
What actually influences it
- Body size and muscle: larger bodies and more muscle burn more energy at rest.
- Movement: everyday activity (not just workouts) adds up over a day.
- Age and genetics: real factors, but not an excuse to give up.
What is mostly hype
Most “metabolism-boosting” foods, teas and supplements have small or short-lived effects at best. The dull-but-true levers are sleep, regular movement, adequate protein and not under-eating so severely that the body adapts.
If you suspect a medical cause for unexplained weight change or fatigue, that is worth a conversation with a healthcare professional rather than a supplement aisle.
