3 Mistakes That Kept Me From Losing 130 Pounds – And How I Finally Overcame Them

Blog Post

Embarking on a weight loss journey can be challenging, filled with ups and downs, unexpected hurdles, and the constant battle of staying motivated. If you’ve ever felt trapped in a cycle of dieting failures, you’re not alone. I was once there too, struggling at 275 lbs with dreams of transforming into a fit and healthy version of myself. It wasn’t until I recognized and addressed the three crucial mistakes that were holding me back that I managed to lose 130 pounds and keep it off for over nine years. In this blog, I’ll delve into how these mistakes impacted my journey and the transformative changes I made that opened the doors to lasting success. Whether you’re just starting your journey or seeking new strategies, my experiences might just resonate with and inspire your own path to a healthier life.

1. Nourishment Over Deprivation

Initially, my approach to nutrition was completely wrong. I had the misguided belief that severely restricting my diet would expedite my weight loss. This meant saying no to carbs, skipping meals, and avoiding protein—all in the name of achieving a bodybuilder physique. However, this approach left me mentally and physically exhausted, hampering my decision-making and fueling cravings.

The revelation came when I acknowledged the significance of a balanced diet. I realized that carbs are essential for brain functionality and energy, while proteins are crucial for building muscle. Healthy fats, fruits, and vegetables are equally important for a well-rounded diet.

  • Balance is Key: Incorporate a variety of nutrients to support brain function and energy levels.
  • Portion Control: Instead of eliminating food groups, focus on the quantity and quality of what you consume.
  • Sustainability: Choose a diet plan that can be consistently followed over time rather than a temporary fad.

By embracing a balanced diet, I was able to make better decisions and stay on track with my weight loss goals.

2. Compassion for Self

At my heaviest, self-compassion was almost nonexistent. My internal dialogue was harsh; I constantly berated myself, which only led to a cycle of guilt and failure. Negative self-talk fueled a cycle of unrealistic expectations and inevitable disappointments.

Learning to speak to myself with kindness and understanding was a crucial turning point. I began to see that sustainable weight loss required a compassionate mindset. It wasn’t about punishment but about making choices that supported my well-being.

  • Gentle Self-Talk: Shift from derogatory to supportive inner dialogue.
  • Allow Flexibility: Understand that occasional indulgences are a part of a balanced diet.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge every bit of progress, however small, to maintain motivation.

For instance, when I craved a hot chocolate despite having my calories planned for the day, I learned to adjust by swapping regular bacon for turkey bacon, allowing room for a treat without guilt.

3. Asking the Right Questions

The weight loss journey was riddled with frustration because I was asking the wrong questions. My focus was on subtraction—what to eliminate from my life—instead of what to add for healthier living. This outlook led to deprivation and repeated failures.

The pivotal change happened when I started asking what I could add to my diet and lifestyle to support my goals. By focusing on adding rather than taking away, I was able to enjoy the process more and avoid feelings of deprivation.

  • Additives Over Subtractions: Introduce more nutritious elements into meals, like additional vegetables or protein sources.
  • Sensible Substitutions: Make smart changes, like opting for a whole-grain bun or adding more toppings to a burger.
  • Maintain Enjoyment: Keep the enjoyable parts of your lifestyle (such as a favorite meal) while enhancing their nutritional value.

For example, my partner and I loved our Friday night burger tradition. Instead of eliminating it, we enhanced it by adding nutritious sides, turning it into a fulfilling meal rather than a forbidden treat.

In essence, these changes were not just about modifying my diet or exercise routine; they were about changing my mindset towards food, body image, and the weight loss journey itself. By focusing on balanced nutrition, cultivating self-love, and reframing my questions, I was able to achieve and maintain my weight loss goals.

For anyone embarking on or stuck in their weight loss journey, remember it’s not only about the physical changes but also about nurturing your mindset and heart. When you find that harmony, you create a sustainable lifestyle that supports your health and happiness.

If my story resonates with you, consider these changes in your own journey. You never know, the door to your success might already be open, waiting for you to step through with the right mindset and approach.
