Why walking might be the most underrated exercise

Walking rarely gets the spotlight, yet it may be the single most sustainable form of movement for most people. It is free, low-impact, and easy to fit into an ordinary day — which is exactly why people actually keep doing it.

Small totals add up

You do not need a perfect 10,000-step target. Research increasingly suggests that meaningful benefits appear well below that number, and that going from very little to a moderate amount matters most. Two or three short walks a day can be easier to sustain than one long one.

Make it stick

  • Attach a walk to an existing habit (after lunch, after dinner).
  • Walk while taking calls.
  • Use a route you enjoy — pleasant beats efficient for consistency.

As with any new activity, build up gradually, and check with a professional if you have joint or heart concerns.
