However, once I identified these crucial errors, everything changed. I was finally able to shed 130 pounds and maintain my healthy weight for over nine years. This blog dives into the three pivotal mistakes that once stood in my way—flawed nutrition choices, lack of self-compassion, and misguided questions—and how overcoming them not only opened doors I thought were closed but also fundamentally transformed my approach to weight loss. When I first started, I aimed for drastic dietary changes, cutting out carbs and skipping meals in hopes of quick results. This approach was unsustainable and led to mental fog and increased cravings. My initial diet lacked the nutrients my body needed for basic brain function and decision-making, making it even harder to stick to my goals.

  • Nutritional Missteps:
    • Skipping meals, particularly breakfast.
    • Eliminating carbs completely, leading to energy drains.
    • Eating minimal protein, affecting muscle mass and satiety.

The turning point came when I recognized the importance of a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and proteins. This change not only boosted my energy but also sharpened my mental clarity, enabling better food choices. By focusing on portion control and introducing variety into my meals, I was able to steadily and sustainably lose weight.

2. Cultivating Compassion: The Key to Mental Resilience

In the past, I was trapped in a cycle of self-criticism, where negative self-talk sabotaged my efforts. This mindset not only deteriorated my self-esteem but also set me up for repeated failures. Harsh diets followed these negative thoughts, leading to inevitable backslides and more self-loathing.

    • Diminished motivation and increased feelings of failure.
    • Unrealistic dieting rules that weren’t sustainable.

Learning to be kind to myself was revolutionary. On days when I felt unwell, instead of punishing myself, I allowed for flexibility—like swapping regular bacon for turkey bacon to enjoy a hot chocolate. These small acts of kindness equipped me with the resilience needed to make healthier choices consistently.

3. Asking the Right Questions: A Shift in Perspective

For a long time, my focus was on deprivation—what could I eliminate from my diet to lose weight? This mindset only led to restrictive eating patterns that I couldn’t maintain. I realized that the key to lasting weight loss was not in restriction but in strategic addition.

  • The Transformation:
    • Instead of removing meals like our cherished burger dates, we looked at what we could add to enhance nutritional value whilst enjoying the same experiences.
    • By adding healthy sides to a meal we loved, we achieved satiety without the calorie overload.

With my partner, we turned our meals into nutritious, enjoyable experiences by adding whole foods and low-calorie options to our regular choices. This approach not only made dining out guilt-free but also enriched our enjoyment of food and living.

Incorporating these three changes—nutritional balance, self-compassion, and strategic additions—turned what was once a frustrating cycle of loss and gain into a sustainable, successful weight loss journey. I’ve learned it’s crucial to cater to both the body’s physical needs and the mind’s need for kindness and patience. Weight loss isn’t solely about reducing numbers on a scale; it’s about achieving harmony between the body and the mind.
