I know this firsthand, having stumbled multiple times as I pursued my goal of shedding 130 pounds—a feat I finally achieved and maintained for over nine years. In this blog, we’re diving deep into the three critical mistakes that hindered my progress until I confronted and overcame them, particularly focusing on the misguided nutritional practices, lack of self-compassion, and asking the wrong questions that kept me stuck. Misguided Nutritional Practices

One of the most significant obstacles in my weight loss journey was understanding the role nutrition played in my overall well-being. Initially, I was strict and uncompromising in my diet, continually setting myself up for failure by attempting to adhere to unrealistic nutritional expectations.

In pursuit of a bodybuilder-like physique, I restricted my food intake severely, avoiding carbs and dramatically limiting my protein consumption. My rationale was that minimizing carbs would help accelerate weight loss. However, this approach backfired, leaving me feeling perpetually fatigued and mentally foggy, impairing my ability to make sound decisions.

What I realized is that carbs are essential for brain function, and a lack of them, along with insufficient protein, only intensifies cravings. In my case, these cravings often led to poor dietary choices, triggering a cycle of guilt and further dieting mishaps. By tweaking my approach to include a balanced diet—with healthy fats, carbs, vegetables, fruits, and proteins—I was able to stabilize my energy levels and make more conscious eating choices.

The key was portion control, allowing me to enjoy a variety of foods without feeling deprived. By gradually introducing new foods, I expanded my dietary palette, making it easier to sustain a healthy eating plan long-term. This balance is crucial; it’s not about extreme restriction but about consistent, manageable changes that support both physical and mental health.

Lack of Self-Compassion

Another major mistake was my lack of self-compassion. For years, I was my own harshest critic, internalizing negative thoughts and allowing them to dictate my actions. At my heaviest, I was deeply critical of myself, to the extent that I couldn’t even bear to look in the mirror. I would berate myself for every perceived failure, creating a toxic cycle of guilt and self-loathing.

What I eventually discovered was the power of self-kindness. When I learned to forgive myself for slip-ups and treat myself with the same compassion I would offer a friend, I started seeing real progress. Instead of punishing myself with rigid and unsustainable diets, I allowed flexibility and forgiveness.

A recent personal experience illustrates this shift in mindset. Feeling under the weather, I craved a comforting hot chocolate one morning. Rather than deny myself, I opted to adjust my calorie intake for the day by switching from regular bacon to turkey bacon, thus saving enough calories to enjoy the treat. This simple act of grace reaffirmed that it’s okay to have indulgences when balanced out with other considerations.

Asking the Wrong Questions

The third crucial mistake was consistently asking the wrong questions. Initially, my focus was on what I needed to eliminate to lose weight. This deprivation mindset had me cutting out meals and entire food groups, which was both unsustainable and counterproductive.

Reframing my approach, I began instead to ask what I could add to my lifestyle to support my weight loss goals. This shift from a deprivation to an abundance mindset was transformative. Along with my partner—who, like me, lost a significant amount of weight—we found ways to incorporate healthier choices into our routine without sacrificing enjoyment.

For instance, rather than remove our cherished burger nights at Harvey’s, we adapted by adding healthier accompaniments. Instead of pairing a burger with fries, which left us unsatiated, we added more nutritious options like salads and baked potatoes topped with lighter ingredients. This allowed us to maintain our traditions and cravings without overindulging, effectively creating a healthier, sustainable eating pattern.

This philosophy of addition over subtraction extends beyond main meals, to smaller indulgences like coffee. Instead of forgoing my love for cappuccinos entirely, I substituted with a low-calorie, protein-rich coffee creamer, maintaining the enjoyment without disregarding my nutrition goals.

The collective journey of addressing these three areas—nutrition, self-compassion, and reframing the right questions—has equipped me with tools to maintain my health long-term.
